With 9.8 points and 9.7 points respectively, Avira Internet Security and Kaspersky are close behind, and both appear in the latest reports from all four labs.In my hands-on malware protection test, Bitdefender didn't fare nearly as well, scoring just 8.6 of 10 possible points. Normalizing and averaging the scores to a 10-point scale, Bitdefender gets a near-perfect 9.9 points. For those who don't have time, I'll summarize my findings here.Three of the four independent testing labs I follow include Bitdefender in their regular reports, and all three give it excellent marks. Any of these four should provide excellent protection against fraudulent websites. The Network Threat Protection component supplements existing web protection by watching for attempts to exploit system and application vulnerabilities. However, in their own recent tests Trend Micro Internet Security and McAfee managed 100 percent detection. Bitdefender earned a marvelous score in my hands-on antiphishing test, with 99 percent detection, the same as Norton. Firefox quantum for mac reviewBitdefender beefs up its basic antivirus with layers of ransomware-related protection. Norton 360 Deluxe routinely owns this test, with scores above 80 percent, but Bitdefender’s 74 percent score came closer than most competitors.Every antivirus should protect against ransomware, just as it fends off any other type of malware, but a slip-up that lets a zero-day ransomware attack succeed can have a huge impact. Examining the logs revealed that it flagged fully 60 percent of its findings using their official CVE name. The fully patched test system was not in any actual danger from these attacks. To lift the bandwidth cap and gain access to all servers, you need a separate subscription, which lists for $39.99 per year or $6.99 per month. Out of the box, it gives you 200MB of bandwidth per device per day, using a program-selected server. Very briefly, it's based on Hotspot Shield and uses that company's infrastructure, but with additional privacy layers. You'll need to read the antivirus review for results of the deep dive into this component by PCMag's VPN expert, Max Eddy. Trackers can ignore the official Do Not Track header with impunity, but Bitdefender actively shuts them down.Bitdefender Antivirus also includes a full scale virtual private network, or VPN. It displays the number of trackers from the current page on its toolbar button you can click the button for details. And all of these features come in what’s nominally a standalone antivirus utility.See How We Test Security Software Bitdefender's Unobtrusive FirewallBitdefender's firewall correctly blocked the web-based port scan tests I hit it with, and even popped up a port scan warning. Windows-based malware can't run, and hence can't defend itself. You can use the File Shredder to permanently delete sensitive files, so that not even a forensic technician can recover them. If pernicious malware resists Bitdefender’s basic protection, just reboot into the Rescue Environment, which launches before Windows. The profile system can automatically configure Bitdefender to conform with your activities such as working or watching movies. A Vulnerability scanner identifies missing security patches for Windows and popular programs, as well as weak Windows account passwords. That option still appears, but under the less-loaded name Alert Mode. Norton works in much the same way, and the levels-of-trust system in Kaspersky Internet Security is also similar. For those who want notification every time an unknown program attempts access, Bitdefender used to offer Paranoid Mode. In its default Autopilot mode, Bitdefender's firewall configures access permissions for known programs and monitors unknowns for any signs of network chicanery. My test system needs a special configuration to avoid protection by NAT.The flip side of firewall protection involves monitoring how programs on your system make use of your internet and network connection. Their IP addresses are local to the network, not visible from the internet, and hence not subject to port scan attacks. To be fair, if you have a home network, the devices connected to it already enjoy the protection of network address translation, or NAT. How would you react on being asked whether nsaprog.exe should be allowed an outbound connection to using port 8088? Most users should leave Alert Mode alone.Protection against network-based attacks that try to exploit security vulnerabilities on your system is a feature often associated with a firewall component.
